Houston Senior Centers offer a variety of programs and services to help senior citizens maintain their independence and vitality and provide a place for seniors to have the opportunity to meet other seniors through social interaction.

Programs include activities, educational classes, counseling and support groups, volunteer opportunities, and wellness programs. Many Senior Centers in Houston also offer meals, help with financial and medical paperwork, transportation to and from the center, shopping trips, outings, and other social services.

Centers for education and activities for those 50+ are for those more active adults. Adult centers are usually part of the Parks & Recreation Departments of city and county.

The Alvin Senior Center offers a wide array of activities such as exercise, line dancing, arts and crafts, games, and day trips. Transportation is available for some programs for those who qualify. The center also offers a congregate meals program. Any senior looking to become involved at their local center is sure to enjoy the Alvin Senior Citizen Center.

City of South Houston Senior Center- 713-947-7700 Ext. 355 The Senior Center is primarily a nutrition site where lunches are served Monday through Friday, both at the Center and to the homebound. The only requirement for joining the Senior Center is that the resident, or spouse, be at least sixty (60) years of age or more. The Senior Center also sponsors recreation and trips for seniors, including transportation for those in qualifying areas. The Center’s operating hours are from 8 a.m. through 1 p.m. The Senior Center also offers many valued services to seniors by making them aware of the right people to contact through organizations such as Medicare, AAA, and Family Services, as well as the many other services housed in the Community Center.

Houston Senior Activities

HPARD Senior Programs provide a wide variety of recreation and leisure activities for seniors, ages 55 years and older, at community centers across the city. Activities include specialty and creative craft classes, fitness and walking clubs, cultural events, field trips, and senior forums. Seniors may also participate in craft exhibitions, computer classes at local libraries, fashion shows, special holiday events, Senior Olympics competition, and sports programs. Most programming is FREE unless otherwise indicated. Field trips and certain programs may require a minimum fee or request that participants provide their own materials.

Activities at Houston Senior Centers include: Exercise and Fitness programs; Computer classes; Arts and Crafts; Games; various Educational classes; Recreational and Social activities; Health Screenings and services; Special Events and Guest speakers. Senior Centers also offer Dances and Dance classes, Clubs, Group Travel opportunities, and much more.

Senior Centers serve a purpose - that is to help keep seniors active both mentally and physically through a wide range of activities.

Congregate Meals on Wheels Houston

Many Houston Senior Centers serve congregate meals such as breakfast and a hot nutritious lunch free or for a small donation. Senior Centers usually ask that meal reservations be made one day in advance. To reserve your congregate meal breakfast or lunch contact your local Senior Center. Senior Centers also serve as a base of operations for the popular Meals on Wheels program.
